Local wildlife

The backyard pond is quiet and peaceful. From the deck you'll often spot the regulars below.

Birds

White Ibis walking near a fallen log
White Ibis

This bird is the University of Miami's mascot. People say ibises are the bravest birds because they're the last to leave when storms come and the first to return after. Their curved orange bill pokes through mud and grass to find crabs, crayfish, and bugs. Babies start out brown and turn white as they grow up.

Muscovy duck with red facial markings standing on grass beside the pond
Muscovy Duck

Those bumpy red patches on the face are called caruncles. Unlike most ducks, muscovies almost never quack. They hiss and make soft trilling sounds instead. They're friendly birds, but please don't feed them.

Male mallard duck with iridescent green head walking on grass
Mallard

The green head looks shimmery because it's iridescent; the colors shift depending on how the light hits. Mallards are the most common duck in the world and the great-great-grandparents of most farm and pet ducks. They sometimes sleep with one eye open to watch for danger.

Mottled duck with mottled brown plumage and orange feet on grass
Mottled Duck

This duck is unique and not spotted in many states other than Florida. They're called dabbling ducks, which means they tip upside-down to feed, with their tails and feet sticking straight up out of the water.

Common gallinule with red shield on bill and yellow legs walking on lawn
Common Gallinule

The bright red shield on the face is skin not feathers. Their long toes work like nature's snowshoes, and they can walk across floating pond plants without sinking. When they take off, they have to run across the water for a few feet first.

Turtles

Turtle with red stripe behind its eye floating in pond water
Red-eared Slider

They're called sliders because they slide right off logs into the water if something startles them. Turtles are cold-blooded, so they love laying out in the sun to warm up. Some sliders live more than 30 years.

Florida cooter turtle peeking out of dark water with no red on head
Peninsula Cooter

This big native Florida turtle can weigh up to 10 pounds. They're usually shy and dive underwater quickly if they spot people. Their dark shell has a pattern of yellow swirls and lines.

Meet your hosts

Chris & Samantha

We live in Boston but during COVID we spent a couple winters in St. Pete and fell in love with the Gulf Coast. We bought this home so we could share the best of St. Pete with guests (and enjoy it ourselves when we visit).

We love St. Petersburg and all that it has to offer, from its beaches to its lively downtown, restaurants, and parks. Our hope is that our home will serve as a comfortable home base to explore this area.
